Appeal by the Verkhovna Rada to the parliaments worldwide and the International Olympic Committee to ban Russia from international sports competitions

Draft resolution of the Verkhovna Rada #8398 of January 30, 2023

Cosponsors: a group of 7 MPs

Status: resolution is passed

Who is affected: international community

Summary of the resolution: the Verkhovna Rada considers it unacceptable to allow Russian and Belorussian athletes to participate in international and Olympic competitions because of the aggression against Ukraine. The Parliament appeals to the International Olympic Committee and international sports federation to ban Russian and Belorussian athletes from participation in any sports competition until the aggression ends and Ukraine gets compensation for the damage.

What is right:

  • the resolution is in line with the national interests of Ukraine since the participation of Russian and Belorussian athletes in international competitions is one of the means to restore the positive image of their countries. This is unacceptable considering the aggressive war waged by Russia and de facto supported by Belorussia.
