Draft resolution #12412 of January 15, 2025

Cosponsors: 51 MPs from the Servant of the People, European Solidarity, Batkivshchyna, and Holos factions and groups Trust and For the Future with Davyd Arakhamia as the first signatory

Status: adopted, awaits to be signed by the Speaker

Who is affected: all citizens of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers

Summary:

  • the resolution established a National Day of Prayer in Ukraine, which will be celebrated annually on February 24
  • the Cabinet of Ministers has three months to develop and approve a comprehensive action plan to officially celebrate the National Day of Prayer.

What is right: the celebration of the National Day of Prayer can become a platform for uniting various religious communities.

What is wrong: the Constitution of Ukraine defines the country as a secular state, and therefore a separate day of prayer may provoke discussions about the interference of religion in state matters.

Alternative solution: to ensure that the new holiday does not become a tool for social division, but rather supports harmony and unity among different confessions. While religious organizations play an essential role in the cultural and social life of the country, the state should remain neutral concerning religious issues.
