Draft resolution #9489 of July 13, 2023

Sponsor: Serhii Kalchenko, Chairman of the Committee on Rules of Procedure, Parliamentary Ethics, and Administration of the Work of the Verkhovna Rada.

Status: submitted to the Verkhovna Rada

Who is affected: MPs, the Apparatus of the Verkhovna Rada, and voters.

Summary of the draft resolution: MP Tetiana Plachkova, a member of the Restoration of Ukraine group, will be removed from office. Earlier, she submitted her resignation “due to a family situation.”

Why this is important: if the resolution is adopted, there will be only 404 MPs in the Parliament instead of 450. As MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak pointed out, this will be a record-low number of MPs in the history of Ukraine. Considering that there are open criminal cases against other MPs, in particular against Serhii Alieksieiev and Liudmyla Marchenko, there could be even fewer MPs in the Parliament in the future.

What is right: the Parliament will dismiss an MP who represents Opposition Platform — For Life (the political party banned in Ukraine) and who was one of the MPs who went to Moscow to meet with Russian officials in 2020 together with Viktor Medvedchuk.

What is wrong: there are fewer and fewer MPs in the Parliament. There is a risk that there will be not enough MPs to adopt laws and make decisions.
